White Rock Coffee

White Rock Coffee

This local coffee gem is very popular in my neighborhood. Throughout the years, I have received numerous Facebook invites from local bands/singers to watch them perform at White Rock Coffee, but since I had a hard time branching out from Starbucks I declined most of them (after four years in Gold Member Status, I finally decided that it was time to break up with the Starbucks’ reward program and move on to better coffee beans- I apologize for not doing this sooner to every one who invited me).

The two-story house is very quaint, but the parking lot leaves a lot to be desired! For such a popular place, I expected a much bigger parking area, but instead it is hidden behind a very narrow drive-thru with uneven pavement. Perhaps this wouldn’t pose a problem if the sole intent of the coffee shop is to be a drive-thru but as a host for live music and with plenty of seating area, I don’t believe it intended to be only a quick fix of Joe.

During my first visit, I ordered the White Rocker Latte- one of their signature drinks. This yummy latte consists of espresso, caramel syrup, and white chocolate… in other words, it’s a cup of dessert! I can’t remember if I visited on the evening of a weekday or on a weekend, but I do remember that it was winter break. That day the place was fairly quiet and empty. I have been to White Rock Coffee a couple of times and I have never really seen it too crowded (which is fine if you’re looking for a place to study). The last time I went was on a Tuesday evening to check out the Open Mic Night with Ryan Berg (pictured below), and it was the most alive I have ever seen the place. However, by 9:30pm almost all the performers had left and it began to die down. The remaining crowd seemed to consist of students catching up with friends or doing some late night studying.

I am still unsure on how I feel about this place, probably because I had high expectations after hearing such great remarks from others. The parking lot is a pain, the atmosphere is dull, there isn’t an actual stage for the performers, they do not do latte art, and the vast majority of the customers tend to be high school aged. But on the pro side, the location is very convenient to my house, the coffee is superb (they roast their own coffee beans so props to that), and the baristas are friendly.  Since I live nearby, I wouldn’t mind coming to this place more often, but if that wasn’t the case, I probably wouldn’t bother with the drive.
